How the Franchise 500 ranking is determined
To be considered for the list, a franchise must have a minimum of 10 units open and operating, have at least one franchise located in North America and be actively seeking new franchisees in the U.S. or Canada.
Once eligibility is confirmed, Entrepreneur uses a comprehensive ranking formula to assess each franchise offering. Each franchise is given a cumulative score based on the analysis of more than 150 data points and only the top 500 are included on the list.
The key evaluation factors include:
- Cost and fees- franchise fee, total investment, royalty fees
- Size and growth – open and operating units, growth rate, closures
- Support- training times, marketing support, operational support, franchisor infrastructure, financial availability, litigation
- Brand strength- social media presence, system size, years in business, years franchising
- Financial strength and stability- Franchisor’s audited financial statements
